At the time of writing this article,  April 9 2014,

1)Visit, http://passportindia.gov.in/
  • Create new user and login.
  • Click on Apply of Passport(new)/Renewal
  • Select Normal or Tatkal at this stage only. Note, you cant change it once you select an option.
  • Select the radio button and appropriate reason Renewal or Fresh or Damaged and continue
  • NON-ECR Category means those who have passed X ( 10th standard ) and can show original proof when asked for verification at Passport Office.
  • You will be shown about 10 pages, to enter details of your personal data
  • Fill all details at each form and Click Next until you are shown final confirmation page.

2)Be very careful before submitting, click on "Preview" and review whether you have entered anything wrong.If entered wrong, please go back and update the same and come back to the final confirmation page
check I Agree and click Submit button.

3)Now you have to pay online for Normal or Tatkaal Category.
For Normal, it is Rs.3000 as of april 3 2014, and Rs. 4000 as on april 3,2014.
If you have selected tatkaal, you need to pay only Rs. 2000 online using Credit or Debit or Net banking or SBI Challan.

4)After successful payment, you need to select nearest PSK - Passport Seva Kendra ( Nearest passport office branch) of your choice and select the category Normal / Tatkal when the booking opens.

5)The booking opens at different timing for different cities of India. 
You can click on "Appointment opening time" link https://portal2.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/online/appointment
to check the booking time of your respective city.

6)Tip: Normally, when your city specific booking time is say, 4.30PM, you can login at 4.28pm and navigate to your saved application form and select link "Book Appointment" link after selecting radio button for your previously saved application form online.
Once you select passport office and click next, you will be shown your automatic booking time if slots are available.

7)Take printout of 

- Printout of first two pages and last two pages of passport.(Must)
-Application form (Must)
-Appointment time shown (Must)
-SSC certificate if NON-ECR Category (Must)
-If address changed and is different from that of previous address mentioned in expired passport,
all necessary address proofs in name of applicant need to be shown when you visit passport office.
- All other certificates/proofs as necessary to be carried with you.(Must)
Disclamer: Please carry as many as original and photocopies of the original proofs, relevant and as seem fit.

8)Only Applicants need to visit personally to Passport Office and this is mandatory. They can accompany a person if needed on the appointed time shown along with necessary proofs and original certificates.
-Please be dressed properly when you visit passport office, as your photo will be on Passport for the next 10 years.Please carry -Your damaged/Old/Expired Original Passport ( Must)
-Once you reach passport office, you need to take a token which will be shown on large LCD screens, in all the next stages explained below which will guide you, whether your turn has arrived to visit the respective stage/officer.

9)Please be prepared to wait for atleast 2 hours once you are in Passport office from the time you enter and exit.

10)There will be three stages, at first stage, the officer at entrance will check all your originals,expired passport, application form and all required proofs for you to get a new, renewed passport.
Only after this verification, you will be asked to wait for some time.
Note: This might take minimum of 15 minutes to 1 hour after verification of documents at first stage to get the applicant's name being called by the officer.

11) Then at Second stage, the next officer will ask you to sit infront of camera and take your fingerprints and Photo of your face. After this, he will verify all your documents and get your signatures on the application form. You can check your application form before signing if your name and address are printed correctly or not and sign them appropriately as directed by the officer. You will also be asked to pay remaining amount
Rs. 2000 if tatkaal and Rs.30 for SMS related information subscription to your mobile number, from Passport website that keeps you updated about your passport application status.( Rs. 30 is optional)
This will take a maximum of 10-15 minutes and you will be asked to move to Third Stage.

12) At third stage & Fourth Stage, the officers will finally check thoroughly and ask you few questions about your current address and all relevant proofs again. Please show them the relevant proofs and move to Fourth Stage. At Fourth stage, also, they will check thoroughly and final decision will be taken , whether you will be granted a passport or not. 

13) After Fourth/Third stage, you need to show your token and get a final printout of acknowledgement of your submitted application and a feedback form asking you to write your personal experience in passport office. The final acknowledgement printout will have Status: Granted if you have been granted a passport by the final officer.

14) I have to undergo all such pressure until i see 'Granted' in the acknowledgement printout and i felt so relieved and happy. It has taken around 2 hours for me when i visited Passport Seva Kendra at Tolichowki, Hyderabad, India.

15) Tip: Please carry all necessary original and photocopies of the proofs and fill the application form correctly and accurately and no need to worry. :)

16) You can track your application status and get the Speed post(Registered post/ courier number) from below link
http://www.passportindia.gov.in/ > Click "Track Application Status" button
and enter your passport application file number mentioned on Acknowledgement printout handed over to you, and date of birth and click submit.
You will see the speed post tracking courier number

17) You can track your passport courier status online in the below India Speed post link
http://services.ptcmysore.gov.in/speednettracking/
by entering your tracking number and click click Track button.
Click Details link to see transit of your passport status.
